Warning signs
- A tingle or shock in or near the pool or spa
- GFCI or breaker trips at the equipment pad
- Pool lights flicker or fail
- Corroded or damaged equipment wiring
- Burning smell at the equipment pad
If anyone feels a tingle or shock: get everyone out of the water, don't touch metal fixtures, and keep everyone out until a licensed electrician checks it.
Concepts to understand
GFCI protection cuts power when current leaks to ground. Bonding connects metal parts so they're at the same potential. Both are code requirements checked by licensed professionals, not homeowner projects.
