Smoke, flame or active fire? Leave and call 911. Downed line or neighborhood outage? Stay away and call your utility. Never open a panel, remove a cover or touch damaged or wet equipment.

Outlets fail at the connections behind them. Heat, discoloration and sparking mean a connection is overheating. A dead outlet with no heat is often on a tripped GFCI or breaker elsewhere.

What you might notice

  • Outlet has no power
  • Cover plate or outlet feels warm
  • Brown or black marks around the slots
  • Sparks when plugging in
  • Plugs fall out of a loose outlet

Common causes

Tripped GFCI

One GFCI can protect several outlets downstream, sometimes in another room.

Loose or overheated connection

A loose wire behind the outlet heats up and discolors it.

Worn device

Old outlets lose grip and can arc.

Overload

Space heaters and high-draw appliances on one outlet.

What you can safely do

  • Stop using a warm, sparking or discolored outlet and unplug what's in it, if it's safe to do so
  • Look for a tripped GFCI in the kitchen, bath, garage or outdoors and press reset
  • Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker (reset once)
  • Don't remove the cover plate
Stop using it and call 856-UNIFORM if: the outlet is warm, discolored, sparking, smells, or the GFCI or breaker trips again.

How a Uniform electrician diagnoses it

We test the outlet and circuit, check upstream GFCIs and connections, and inspect the device and wiring behind it. Damaged devices are replaced and the circuit is tested.

Frequently asked questions

Why are several outlets dead?

They're often all protected by one GFCI, sometimes in another room or the garage.

Is a warm outlet an emergency?

Stop using it and call. If you see smoke or flame, leave and call 911.

Can I just replace the outlet myself?

We don't recommend it. A warm outlet often means a connection or wiring problem behind it.

Need an electrician you can trust in your home?

Call now. We'll ask a few questions, give you an honest arrival window and send a background-checked, licensed technician in uniform.
